Did You Lose Control of a 2023 or 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning and Suffer Bodily Injury? A Safety Recall May Explain What Happened.
Ford Motor Company has recalled 11,922 of its 2023-2024 F-150 Lightning Trucks with an increased risk of crashing. All the affected trucks are battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).
On December 19, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Ford had manufactured and assembled some of its F-150 Lightning trucks with an improperly secured front upper control arm ball joint.
An incorrectly secured front upper control arm may detach from the F-150’s knuckle assembly (the steering knuckle), resulting in a loss of steering control and vehicle direction. And decreased steering control increases the risk of a motor vehicle crash.

Recall Background
Ford said it first knew of this potential problem in September 2024 when a customer reported that their truck with fewer than 1,000 miles vibrated while driving at highway speed before it suddenly veered left into a side rail. A mechanic determined the upper control arm’s ball joint nut was missing, and the joint had separated from the knuckle assembly.
Ford subsequently learned of at least one other incident related to this issue.
The following month, in October 2024, Ford investigated the issue internally and decided that some F-150 Lightning vehicles built between November 6, 2023, and February 12, 2024, may have failed to reach the required torque: 8,017 2023 model year Ford 150 Lightning BEV trucks and 3,905 2024 model year Ford F150 Lightning BEV vehicles.
What Happens Next?
Ford expects to notify its dealers of this F-150 Lightning safety issue on January 6, 2025. Letters to vehicle owners will go out from February 3, 2025, to February 7, 2025.
