Understanding Amazon’s Logistics Operations

Amazon’s logistics network is critical to the company’s financial success and growth. The company and third-party sellers use Amazon’s online platform, physical stores, fulfillment warehouses, and delivery services to ship orders to customers.

In the United States, Amazon packs, ships, and delivers billions of packages yearly with the help of approximately 1.5 million full and part-time employees spread throughout its fulfillment network. As far back as 2019, Amazon could offer same-day and one-day delivery to 72% of the U.S. population. And it now has a last-mile transportation network similar in size to UPS (United Parcel Service)

To get packages to customers quickly, Amazon uses several types of facilities and warehouses:

    • Fulfillment Centers are large warehouses that store millions of items in inventory. Employees pick, pack, and ship customer orders. Some Amazon fulfillment centers are enormous, employing over 1,500 people to pick (select orders), pack, and ship orders. For example, Amazon’s distribution center in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, employs nearly 3,000 employees in the 3+ million square foot warehouse. In addition, some fulfillment centers are highly automated and use robotics to move objects.

    • Sortation centers receive packages from fulfillment centers and sort them by destination before loading them onto trucks for delivery.

    • Delivery stations receive orders from fulfillment warehouses and sortation centers, prepare them for delivery, and load them onto Amazon delivery vans. These facilities are the final stop before packages reach customers.

    • Receive centers are warehouses that receive large inventory shipments from manufacturers before sending them to a fulfillment center.

    • Other facilities include customer return facilities, same-day delivery centers, air hubs, and Amazon Fresh hubs.
